How to label your kid’s backpack with embroidery
When you get a new backpack for your kid, it feels weird to take a Sharpie marker to it. Here’s a quick tutorial to help you embroider your child’s name on it with a simple backstitch.
Embroidery supplies needed
Bohin extra-fine retractable fabric pencil - I like this one because it’s retractable and its white lead shows up well on black fabric and stays put during the duration of your project.
Colorful embroidery floss - A pack of bright colors works well for kiddos.
Tapestry needle - Basically a bigger, fatter embroidery needle to punch through canvas and heavier fabric. You may already have one if you have a mixed needle pack.
Embroidery scissors - I like these embroidery scissors because they’re super cute and super sharp. But any sharp fabric or craft scissors will do!
Any canvas backpack - We’re a skateboarding family, so we love this Vans backpack.
Write your child’s name
With the fabric pencil, write your child’s name on the backpack. I recommend starting in the center with the middle letter and working out from there, so you can be sure the name is as close to the center as possible.
Embroider the name on the backpack
Use a regular backstitch and embroider your child’s name, using regularly-sized stitches the size of a grain of rice.
I use smaller stitches as I go around curves so the rounded letters look smoother.
Add flair in extra spots where needed
If your kiddo wants some extra decoration, go wild! Their backpack is their domain, and extra flair is always fun.
Benefits of personalized embroidery labels for your kid’s backpack
Embroidery is a great way to slow down and be in the moment. Plus, it’s therapeutic. As a friend once told me, there’s no better way to resolve emotional issues than to stab something thousands of times over with a needle 😉
With embroidery, your child’s name will last longer than a permanent marker.
Because they get to choose their color and extra decorations, they get to contribute to the creative project.
Plus? You’ll be gloriously forced to get your eyes off of your phone or a screen to complete the project.
Yes, I’ll be embroidering things for my kids for as long as they’ll let me. Until it becomes super uncool—and then maybe it’ll be cool again once they get older 😂
